Hello Super Friends, Be Prepared: The Motto of the Boy Scouts of America One of my favorite stories as a kid is the story of The Ant and The Grasshopper. The story is about a grasshopper playing his fiddle and having lots of fun during the nice warm summer while at the same time teasing an ant for working so hard in the field. The ant is working hard in the field preparing for the coming winter. The grasshopper tries to persuade the ant to stop working and come play with him. The ant ignores the grasshopper and keeps on working. When winter comes the grasshopper is very cold and hungry. In the next scene the grasshopper is seen looking into the window of the ant’s home on a freezing cold night. Through the window the grasshopper sees that the ant is warm and cozy sitting by the fireplace. There is an abundance of food on the kitchen table. The story teaches that it is a good idea to be prepared for the worst. When I heard this story as a kid, I thought it was a cool story and knew it taught a good lesson. Unfortunately, the story didn’t tell me what it was I should be doing to prepare for the “winter of life”. It’s easy to see that the best way for animals to prepare for winter is to eat as much food as possible like the way bears do before hibernating. Or store nuts in various hiding places like the way squirrels do. So, what should people be doing to prepare for the “winter of life”?
